The report explores recent trends in part-time higher education across each of the UK countries, and adds an international perspective by making comparisons with countries beyond the UK. It considers a range of macroeconomic and policy factors that may affect part-time study. The report has five chapters: the first introduces the research, identifies its scope and objectives and emphasises the economic importance of part-time higher education; chapter two provides a descriptive profile of the part-time higher education population within the UK; chapter three provides an in-depth analysis of the part-time higher education sector in England, with a focus on recent trends, features of the decline and potential explanatory factors; chapter four compares and contrasts the recent trends in the part-time higher education sector across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and their drivers; and chapter five analyses how the UK part-time sector compares internationally and how macroeconomic conditions have impacted the part-time sector within comparator countries.
